island

Picture of Samos at NightOnly 18 miles from Turkey and 175 nautical miles from Piraeus, the population of Samos is over 40,000. There is 476 sq.km of land mass and 160km of coast. One of the most beautiful Greek islands it attracts many tourists, most of whom are well heeled and mature.

The philosopher/mathematician Pythagoras was from Samos as well as many other luminaries. Many pass through Samos on their way to Ephesus in Asia Minor. The island is mountainous with its highest peak, Kerki at 1440 metres.

Samos is a particularly welcoming island; the people are warm and friendly and tourism has not affected their generosity. In general Samos is one of the "quieter" islands and does not appeal to the younger generations.

Samos is a great island for families, especially those who like to experience breathtaking mountain scenery, beautiful bays, olive and pine groves, magnificent honey and of course, the renowned Samian wine.
